#1              NOTHING WITHOUT LOVE

1)    EVERYTHING IN LIFE, ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE PAIN,
WITH ITS MOMENTS OF GLORY, AND THE FAILURES WHEN WE START AGAIN,
SO MANY BLESSINGS IN THIS LIFE, FROM BEING YOUNG TO GROWING OLD,
FROM KNOWING NOTHING AT ALL ABOUT THE WORLD, TO WISDOM AND CONTROL.

CHORUS:
..ARE NOTHING WITHOUT LOVE, DON'T START A THING BEFORE YOU LOVE,
DON'T TAKE ANOTHER STEP ALONE, BECAUSE ALONE IS NOT YET LIVING,
WHAT IS A MAN WITHOUT A WOMAN, OR A WOMAN WITHOUT A MAN?
WE ARE MADE TO OVERFLOW WITH LOVE
AND ITS BEEN THAT WAY...  SINCE TIME BEGAN

2)    WE MAY LEARN TO CURE THE WORST DISEASE, OR SOLVE THE DEEPEST MYSTERIES,
WE MAY REACH UP TO THE SKY, AND TOUCH A STAR,
WE MAY EARN THE WEALTH OF NATIONS, OR BE RENOWNED FOR OUR CREATIONS,
WE MAY BE EVERYTHING TO ALL, OR WE MAY JUST BE WHO WE ARE...

CHORUS: (BUT WE...)

ECHO: DON'T BUY THE LOVELY LIES THEY ARE GIVING.

BRIDGE:   ALL THE GAMES ARE JUST EXCUSES, THE FLIRTATIONS AND ABUSES,
ALL THE INTRIGUES AND THE ONE-NIGHT STANDS,
                 PROLONG THE AGONY OF SEPARATION.

CHORUS: (FOR THEY...)

                            #2             A BETTER WORLD

1)            WE ARE ALWAYS DISAPPOINTED IN OUR FELLOW MAN TO FIND,
HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THE FACT THAT WE ARE ALL CONNECTED.
AND EVERY TIME HE GETS AHEAD, HE LEAVES SOMEONE BEHIND,
THUS BY ABANDONING BUT ONE IS THE ENTIRE RACE NEGLECTED.

CHORUS:           BE SOMEONE KIND, BE SOMEONE FAIR, BE SOMEONE OFFERING TO SHARE,
THE MANY BLESSINGS THAT ON EARTH ARE FREELY GIVEN.
GIVE OF YOURSELF, WHAT YOU CAN SPARE, FOR LIFE IS BRIEF, AND LOVE IS RARE.
BUT WE CAN CHANGE THAT FOR A BETTER WORLD TO LIVE IN.

2)            BY HOARDING NATURE'S GIFTS WE KEEP FROM OTHERS OF OUR KIND,
THE THINGS THEY NEED TO LIVE LIFE WELL AND BE RESPECTED.
THE ILLUSION OF IMPORTANCE SOMEHOW JUSTIFIES OUR MIND,
AND PASSIFIES THE GUILT...  FOR THE COMPASSION WE REJECTED.

CHORUS:

3)            WE FIND A WORLD TO BE SOMEWHAT APALLING,
WHERE MOST WILL LOSE FOR JUST A FEW TO WIN,
WHERE STARS, TO RISE, ABANDON OTHERS FALLING,
AND BEAT OUT COUNTLESS THRONGS,  JUST BEING "COUNTED IN"....  BUT

                       #3             SAILING

1)             HE LOVES TO BE SAILING... THE SKY ALL AROUND HIM,
ITS A JOY TO BE SAILING...  SETTING HIS COURSE.
BY A PART OF HIS  HEART... NO MAPS BEFORE HIM,
HE KNOWS WHERE HE'S GOING... BY USING HIS DREAMS AS HIS CHART.

2)            OH, HE WANTS TO BE SAILING... WITH THE WAVES ALL ABOUT HIM.
HE JUST DREAMS TO BE... SAILING.... WATCHING THE SKY,
ITS CLEAR - WITH NO CLOUDS ALLOWED. GRAY SKIES WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT.
TIL TOMORROW... HE'S SAILING AND SMILING OUT LOUD.

3)           HE LOVES TO BE SAILING... WITH SUNSHINE UPON HIM.
THERE'S NO RAIN WHEN HE'S SAILING...  STEERING HIS SHIP,
IS WHERE HE'S BELONGED ALL ALONG... HE'S THE SINGER,
THE BOAT IS HIS INSTERUMENT... TUNED SWEET... AND SAILING'S THE SONG.

4)           YES, HE LOVES TO GO SAILING... I WILL BE RIGHT BESIDE HIM.
WE'LL SING HARMONY.. WITH THE WIND AND SEA.
HEART IN HEART WE'LL BE SAILING.  OOH, OOH, OOH

                        #4             FORBIDDEN SONG

1)       WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG, THERE WAS A MELODY FORBIDDEN,
TO EVER FIND ESCAPE OR MAKE ITS WAY INTO A SONG,
I HELD IT IN A LIFETIME,  LIKE A SECRET DARK AND HIDDEN,
NEVER THINKING THAT FORBIDDEN TUNES WERE ANYTHING BUT WRONG.

CHORUS:    IN EVERY HEART RESIDES A SONG, LONGING TO BE SUNG ALOUD,

IT PATIENTLY AWAITS OUR WHOLE LIFE LONG,
FOR US TO SING IT FREE AND FOR US TO SING IT PROUD,
AND FOR US TO SING IT OPENLY AND STRONG.

2)     DAYS AND YEARS FRUSTRATED SOON BECOME ENTIRE LIVES,
ABATING SOMEONE ELSE’S FEAR, NO PART OF US SURVIVES.
BUT SHOULD A LIFE BE FORFEIT FOR THE RIDICULE OF OTHERS,
SACRIFICED FOREVER WHILE THE SOUL WITHIN US SMOTHERS?

CHORUS:

3)     BE WHO YOU ARE, BE FREE TO BLOOM, BE STARTLING AND BRIGHT,
BE UNCAGED BIRDS WHO STRETCH YOUR WINGS,
TO RISE ABOVE THE LOWLY THINGS,
FORBIDDEN SONGS WHICH NO ONE SINGS UNTIL THEY  FIND THE LIGHT.

CHORUS:

                 # 5              The Streets of Paris

1)    A CONCERTINA WHINES NEAR PARIS OPEN AIR CAFES.
ECHOING LIKE SPIRITS AND HAUNTING ALLEYWAYS,
EDITH PIAF PHANTOMS AND GHOSTS OF CHARLES TRENETS,
HYMN L'AMOUR, LA VIE EN ROSE, LA MER, T'ES BEAU TU SAIS.

(Above line: French song names: Song of Love, Life in Pink, The Sea, You Are Beautiful, You Know)

2)    REVIVING THE TOULOUSE LA TRECS AND EARNEST HEMMINGWAYS,
WHO STAGGERED PAST THE RIVER SEINE,  OR DOWN CHAMPS ELYSEES,
THE RAINY PARIS STREETS REFLECT IN OH SO MANY WAYS,
THE CONTRADICTION MODERN PARIS MAKES TO BYGONE DAYS.

3)    WHEN HUMAN NATURE, YEARNING TO EXPRESS LIFE AND ITS MEANINGS,
LIVED BOLD, UNSENSORED, WITHOUT FEARING MAN'S LICENTIOUS LEANINGS.
TODAY REPLACED BY BUSINESSMEN IN CHROME AND GLASS-CASED BUREAUS,
WITH ONE AND ONLY ONE CONCERN - ACCUMULATING EUROS.

4)    THOUGH ANGELS, GODS, AND HUMAN GIANTS LINE EACH PARIS STREET,
IN CROWDED METROS WORKING MASSES PLOD BENEATH THEIR FEET.
INHABITING AN UNDERGROUND UNABLE TO CONCEAL,
THE TRUTH THAT HUMAN MISERY AND SERVITUDE ARE REAL.

5)   THE STREET LAMPS ON THE MONMARTE STEPS, THE CROISSANTS AND THE WINE,
THE EIFFEL TOWER AND ARC SUGGEST THAT EVERYTHING IS FINE.
THE CHIC PARISIANS IN BLACK, THE CITY FAMED FOR LIGHT,
AND ALL THE STREETS OF PARIS FEIGN THERE IS NO HUMAN PLIGHT.

                      #7          HIGH

CHORUS:          HIGH, HIGH, HIGH, HIGH...

1)     WHERE STATELY ELK AND BIG-HORNED SHEEP,
IGNORE WHEN TIME AND PEOPLE PASS,
AND LACKING LOFTIER GOALS THEY SLEEP,
AND RISE TO NIBBLE MOUNTAIN GRASS.
         AND RISE TO NIBBLE GRASS.

CHORUS:

2)      WHERE EAGLES WITH THEIR WINGS EXTENDED,
         RUN ON RESTLESS WINDS,
ABOVE THE HIGHEST PEAKS AND THUNDER
         SURVEY THE TREELESS TUNDRA.

CHORUS:

3)      BEYOND THE RANGE OF MEN,
         ABOVE THEIR GREAT DIVIDES,
THE HUMAN SOUL, OUTSTRETCHED, IS FREED,

                       #8         THROUGH WIRE RIMS

INTRO:       WE LOVE YOU, JOHN DENVER, FOREVER GREATLY MISSED.

CHORUS:   THROUGH WIRE RIMS, THE SKY WAS BLUER,
DAYS WERE BRIGHTER, LOVE WAS TRUER,
HEARTS WERE LIGHTER, THE MOUNTAINS HIGHER
HILLS ON FIRE, THROUGH RIMS OF WIRE.

1)     JOHN DENVER, GONE FOREVER, GONE NOW BUT WITH US STILL.
YOUR SOUL WAS FREEDOM'S SONG, YOUR SONGS WERE FREEDOM'S QUILL.
THEY OPENED UP INSIDE OUR HEARTS THE DOOR TO NATURE'S MIND.
AND FREED US ALL IN SUCH A WAY TO LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND.

CHORUS:

2)     YOU WERE THE VOICE OF WHOLESOMENESS, THE SIMPLE ONE, THE TRUE.
THE BEAUTIES OF THE NATURAL WORLD WE SAW THEM ALL THROUGH YOU.
YOURS WERE THE WORDS OF TREES AND BIRDS, OF SUNSHINE, WIND AND RAIN.
AND EVERY TIME YOUR GUITAR SINGS, IT PLAYS OUR HEARTS AGAIN.

CHORUS:

ENDING:          WE LOVE YOUR SONGS, AND NATURE WHICH THEY KISSED,

#11               IF WE CAN MAKE A BETTER WHEEL

1)     THE TROUBLES OF THIS WORLD ARE LIKE RAGING FLOODS AND SWELLS,
THAT RISE UP IN A TEMPEST AND DESTROY ALL HOPE FOR PEACE,
AND WE WONDER, IF WE MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHTMARES & THE HELLS,
IS THERE ANY WAY TO HEAL THE WORLD AND MAKE THE EVIL CEASE?

CHORUS:   IF WE CAN MAKE A BETTER WHEEL BY MAKING BETTER SPOKES,
A WHEEL THAT WILL GO SMOOTHER IF WE WORK TO MAKE IT ROUNDER,
THEN WE CAN MAKE A BETTER WORLD BY BEING BETTER FOLKS,
A WORLD THAT TURNS FOR EVERYONE WHO WORKS TO MAKE IT SOUNDER.

2)    THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS OFTENTIMES ARE SOLVED BY SMALL SOLUTIONS,
THE SLIGHTEST STROKES OF GENIUS CAN PRODUCE PROFOUND RESULTS,
IT DOESN’T HELP TO TALK ABOUT OR OFFER GRAND CONCLUSIONS,
WE HAVE TO CHANGE OURSELVES INSTEAD OF CHANGING SOMEONE ELSE.

CHORUS:

3 )   THE ONLY PIECE OF REAL ESTATE THAT WE CAN MAKE A PARADISE,
IS IN THE HEART OF EACH OF US WHERE HUMAN WORLDS ARE FRAMED.
A WORLD OF INHUMANITY CALLED HUMAN IS A PARADOX,
UNLESS WE REACH THE HUMAN GOAL FOR WHICH THE RACE WAS NAMED.

              #12                THIS MOMENT

1)    LET THIS LOVING MOMENT IGNITE A TINY SPARK,
FLASHING BRIGHTLY NEW HOPE INTO THE VOID,
A LIGHT DISPELLING WICKEDNESS, AND LIES, AND HATE, AND DARK,
AND FEAR THAT LEAVES SO MANY LIVES DESTROYED.

CHORUS:    FROM THIS MOMENT, RISE, OH LONG-AWAITED GENERATION,
WITH THE VISION OF HUMANITY  ENDOWED WITH TRUTH AND MIGHT,
FROM OUR LOVE AND FROM OUR PASSION, GROW INTO A WHOLESOME NATION,
FROM THIS MOMENT, RISE, TO OVERCOME THE HUMAN PLIGHT.

2)   AND IN THIS SOLEMN MOMENT WE COMMIT OURSELVES TO LIFE,
AND ABOVE ALL THINGS TO LIVING LIFE TO TURN THE WORLD TO GOOD.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE CHALLENGE, AND THE BATTLE, AND VICTORY,
OF RAISING UP A WARRIOR WHO CANNOT BE WITHSTOOD.

CHORUS:

3)    THIS MOMENT IN ETERNITY CONCEIVED,
ENACTED BY A WILLING, ARDENT PAIR,
CALLS FORTH AT LAST AN AGE-OLD DREAM BELIEVED,
A NEW WORLD WHERE NEW HOPE SUPPLANTS DISPAIR.

CHORUS:  (AND)

                #13              SPIRIT LAKE

SPOKEN:       IN 1866, UTE INDIANS CAMPING ON THE SHORES OF GRAND LAKE,COLORADO
WERE ATTACKED BY MIRAUDING TRIBES WHO CROSSED WILLOW CREEK PASS.
                      THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN PADDLED OUT INTO THE LAKE TO ESCAPE;
BUT A FATEFUL WIND  AROSE...  AND THEY PERISHED.
NOW, IN THE DEAD OF WINTER, THEIR CRIES CAN STILL BE HEARD OVER THE LAKE
WHICH HAS COME TO BE CALLED, "SPIRIT LAKE"...

CHORUS:      OH SPIRIT LAKE SCREAMS IN THE COLD, FROZEN DAYS,
IT CREAKS, AND IT POPS AND IT MOANS.
THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE TOWN OF GRAND LAKE,
                      KNOW WELL THE  BLOOD-CHILLING GROANS.

1)   THE TALE HAS BEEN TOLD FIFTEEN DECADES AND MORE,
HOW THE UTES WHO ONCE CAMPED ON THE LAKE,
WERE INVADED BY TRIBES FROM THE EASTERN PLAINS,
      WHEN ARAPAHO CROSSED WILLOW CREEK.

2)   THE UTES WHILE DEFENDING THEIR LANDS AND THEIR HOME,
CAST THEIR WOMEN AND CHILDREN ADRIFT,
ON A MAKESHIFT RAFT TO PROTECT THEM FROM HARM,
BUT THE WINDS THAT ENGULFED THEM WERE SWIFT.

CHORUS:

3)   NOW THE SPIRITS OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES,
       FOR THAT DREADFUL, ILL-FATED MISTAKE.
ARE THE VOICES AND CRIES OF THE CHILDREN AND WIVES,
FROM THE BOTTOM OF SPIRIT LAKE.

           #14            THE BALLAD OF BRECKENRIDGE

1)    UP ABOVE 9,000 FEET A HUNDRED YEARS AGO,
MEN CAME SLIDING ON EIGHT FOOT SKIS,
THROUGH ROCKY LAND WITH TALL PINE TREES,
        AND DRIFTS OF SILVER SNOW.

2)    STRONG MEN CAME WITH AXE AND SAW, AND BROUGHT THE TIMBER DOWN,
       BORED HOLES THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS
AND THE SILVER FLOWED IN FOUNTAINS
       AND BUILT A MINING TOWN.

CHORUS:       OH BRECKINRIDGE, THE SNOW STILL FALLS UPON YOU.
BIG BRECKINRIDGE, IF ONLY THE PEOPLE KNEW,
THAT YOUR PEAKS OF ROYAL BEAUTY
WILL RECLAIM THE RIGHT TO BE FREE,
AND BECOME A PLACE OF WONDER ONCE AGAIN.

3)    AFTER ALL THE SILVER'D GONE, THEIR LIVES GOT HARD AND TRYING.
THEY PICKED UP STAKES AND BOARDED TRAINS
TO FIND A PLACE TO START LIFE AGAIN,
AND  LEFT THE OLD TOWN DYING.

4)     A FEW MORE YEARS AGAIN HAD PASSED, AND THE TOWN OF SNOW AND SUN,
WAS ONCE AGAIN BUILT ON HOPES,
WITH LIQUOR BARS AND BIG SKI SLOPES,
        AND DECLARED ITS OWN KINGDOM.

CHORUS:

5)    I SIT AND WATCH THE SNOW FALL. THE MOUNTAINS HOLD ME CAPTIVE.
I BLOCK THE WALLS OF CONCRETE,
AND THE CAR WHEELS ON THE PAVED STREET,
ONCE AGAIN MY LONELY HEART LIVES.

CHORUS:        (COME) OVER, (COME) OVER, LOOK SOMEWHERE IN THE GLASS,
AND SEE A PERSON IDOLIZED, WITH LOOKS AND CHARM AND CLASS.
WHO THINKS HE HAS CELEBRITY, WHO THINKS HE IS IMMORTAL,
WHO THINKS THAT HE IS LOOKING THROUGH SOME TIMELESS, ANCIENT PORTAL.

1)     NOT ATTACHED TO MAN, OR GOD, NOR EVEN SOMETHING DEARER,
HIS  CHIEF PREOCCUPATION IS AN IMAGE IN A MIRROR,
ONCE FIRM, FAIR SKIN, WITH FEATURES STRONG AND HAIR AS THICK AS CLOVER,
NOW WITH GAPS WHERE SCALP APPEARS, HE TRIES TO COMB THEM OVER.

CHORUS:  (COMB)

2)     THERE'S NOTHING LEFT BUT MEMORIES, ILLUSIONS AND DIM PASTS.
AND GAZING AT HIMSELF REVEALS THE FACT THAT NOTHING LASTS.
LIKE DREAMS THAT FADE WHEN WAKING, OPPORTUNITIES UNTAKEN,
AND A LIFE ONE IS FORSAKING FOR IMAGES MISTAKEN.

3)     NOW HE LOOKS WITH DIFFERENT EYES, AND SEES THE NAKED TRUTH,
REFLECTIONS ARE ILLUSIONS, ESPECIALLY OF YOUTH,
AND FACED WITH THIS REALITY, BARE AND WANTING COVER,
HE EASES TRUTH'S BRUTALITY, AND TRIES TO COMB IT OVER.

WHO BREATHED THE HOT MAGNOLIA-SCENTED AIR,
WHO SWAM OUT IN LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN, OR MISSED SCHOOL FOR A HURRICANE,

2)     MULE-DRAWN CART DILAPIDATED, RED PIN-STRIPES AND LETTERS  FADED,
"ROMAN CHEWING CANDY" HIS SIGN READ,
HANDING OUT THROUGH BUTTER VAPORS, TAFFY, ROLLED IN CLEAR WAX PAPERS,
THROUGH AN OPEN WINDOW POPPED HIS HEAD.

CHORUS:          CLANG, CLANG, CLANG, CLIP-CLOP, CLIP CLOP,
THE ROMAN CANDY MAN WOULD STOP,
FOR IDLE CHILDREN NEEDING THINGS WORTH DOING.
HE BROUGHT US SMILES IN SUMMER TREATS,
IN FOOT-LONG STICKS OF ROMAN SWEETS,
BUT MORE THAN THAT, HE KEPT US BUSY... CHEWING.

3)      THE HARDEST PART BY FAR WAS CHOOSING,

AND WERE SHOCKED TO LEARN WHAT ONLY GROWN-UPS SEE,
THAT ALL THOSE YEARS WHAT HAD BEEN HIDDEN,
BY THE WAGON HE HAD RIDDEN,
HIS LEGS WERE AMPUTATED FROM THE KNEE.

CHORUS:

TAG:     BUT MORE THAN THAT HE KEPT US BUSY CHEWING...

ENDING:         CLANG, CLANG, CLANG, CLIP-CLOP, CLIP-CLOP,
                       CLANG, CLANG, CLANG, CLIP-CLOP, CLIP-CLOP,
                       CLANG, CLANG, CLANG, CLIP-CLOP, CLIP-CLOP,
CHEW... CHEW.... CHEW   (3x)  (AND FADE)
